the OTHER media goes over the edge for charity

Written 15.03.07 by: Sally Smith

Three brave members of the OTHER media have abseiled down the 469ft high Guy’s Hospital Tower in aid of the Evelina Children’s Hospital. Managing Director George Crabb, Developer Mary Cook and Director Martin Goode have raised more than £2,000 for the charity and the total is still rising.

The group's day began around lunchtime on Saturday, with registration and abseiling practice off a fifth floor stairwell. Fully suited and briefed, the party of four proceeded to the top floor and the specially constructed abseil platform. Looking out at the amazing view of London and not down at the considerable drop: Mary, George and Martin were harnessed up and one at a time they leant back over the edge and made their descent down the tower to waiting family and friends.

MD, George Crabb, descended in the fastest time of two minutes. “I don’t know whether it was fear or skill but I rocketed down the side of the building. It was pretty windy up there so I wasn’t keen to hang around. It is an amazing feeling being that high up, yet feeling so safe in the harness.”

Mary Cook enjoyed the thrill of the experience. “It seems strange to say but I didn’t feel nervous in the run-up to the abseil at all, the only hairy moment was halfway down when my rope got tangled up and I had to free myself. My family and friends were cheering me on so I kept on going. I’m really proud that I did the abseil and am happy to have raised so much more than I expected for the Evelina Children’s Hospital.”

London’s Evelina Children's Hospital provides everything from routine care and minor surgery to life saving treatment for over 90,000 children every year. It serves patients from London, the south and much further a field in more serious cases. The Evelina Appeal raises money to buy equipment, furnishings and toys; to give the children and their families the very best care and environment possible.
