Opening up BAFTA’s photographic archive with The 100 Collection

Written 24.06.08 by: Sally Smith

We are pleased to announce the launch of our latest digital project for BAFTA - The 100 Collection. The 100 Collection website showcases four decades of Academy history in photographic form. Ranging from 1953 to 1984, one hundred great photos from the BAFTA archive have been digitised and are available to view online for the first time.

The 100 Collection has been given a distinct creative feel allowing the site to stand alone from the BAFTA website and begin to forge its own identity and following. The backend has been designed to be fully extensible and flexible, with the addition of new images to come as BAFTA continues to digitise its extensive historical archive.

The images are all readily searchable with tag clouds directing people to popular themes like ‘red carpet moments’, ‘film winners’ and ‘fashion highlights’. Visitors can also use the free text search or chronologically scroll through and explore the photos.

Rob Cawston, BAFTA’s Web Editor, is extremely pleased with The 100 Collection. “It is great to be able to open up such a rich photographic archive to the public, using a medium that’s far reaching and cost effective. We’ve also been able to accurately catalogue the images, using customisable META data, which will aid efficiency”.
