London web design and ecommerce development booming

While the wintery cold of March has lingered longer than usual, in the world of online retail and website design, the temperature has been much warmer. Is this the start of a mini boom or simply the result of retailers and brands noticing the growing impact of the Internet on their sales and those of their competitors?

Tomorrow night I will be addressing the Kingston University Enterprise Club on the question, and from our experience at the OTHER media, I will report that the London web market really is booming.

Here are some of the signs:

  • Enquiries for work are running at about 5 times the rate of the same period last year
  • More brands are realising that their existing sites let them down and are commissioning new ones
  • More entrepreneurs are imagining brand new businesses and some who contact us have realistic budgets and expectations
  • Existing clients are moving to the next level with their online stores investing seriously in supply chain integration, web analytics and improved customer journeys
  • The local web design and ecommerce job market has become highly competitive with relatively few highly experienced candidates applying
  • Our competitors appear to be in the same position with our friendly rivals all reporting new wins and work
  • Online PPC advertising rates for our industry have risen as more of our competitors have noticed the benefits of this type of promotion
  • High search engine rankings are being more eagerly fought after by some of our competitors. Others, suprisingly, seem to have missed the importance of this channel for leads and enquiries
